“I’m sorry, he’s not here at the moment. You’ll have to make an appointment.”

David caught the words as he opened the door to his office building and stepped on through. He recognised the voice as young Melissa who worked the reception desk on Tuesday mornings and found himself frowning but dismissing the conversation up ahead, choosing instead to focus on the coffee in his hand as he used his other to cover the yawn that escaped his mouth.

“Do you have a number I can contact him on? Anything?” The second voice was also female, and as David rounded the corner, his eyes found the owner, her dark curls tied up messily and her posture a mixture of defiance and power.

“I can give you the number for this desk, but I can’t give you Dr Travis’s private number. Not without his permission.”

“This is important,” the young girl pleaded, her hand tapping against the desk before falling away as her shoulders slumped. “Please.”

“I’m Dr Travis,” David said, the words coming out a little choked. He cleared his throat and the young girl spun around to face him, her deep brown eyes seeming to stare into him. “How can I help?”

“David Travis?” the girl questioned, and he bobbed his head. At that, she marched across the small room toward him, and he found himself taking a step back despite himself. “I need to find Tobias.”

“Tobias…” David repeated, before giving a nod of his head to Melissa to let her know everything was okay. He motioned toward the door that led toward his office and started making his way toward it. “I think we should talk.”

At first, she seemed reluctant, but after a deep breath, the girl followed him, but her narrowed gaze told him she was still wary and untrusting. She stayed a step behind him, and when it came to entering his office, she made sure to keep him in her sights, leaning away from him as she passed through the doorway and into his office. He said nothing of it and made his way around his desk, hoping to put her at ease by sitting down. Still, even when he motioned toward the spare chair, she refused to sit, staying close to the now closed door.

“You said you needed to find Tobias,” David said, opening the conversation up and feeling a little lost. He pulled his phone from his pocket and sat it on the desk in front of him with his coffee. “Is he okay?”

“I don’t know,” she answered, words clipped. “That’s why I’m here. I haven’t seen him since yesterday and he’s not answering his phone.”

“And you thought I might know something?”

“He had your grandfather’s journal. Last I knew, he was planning on bringing it back to you.” She raised an eyebrow at him, looking him over, and he couldn’t help but feel there was an underlying trace of accusation beneath her words.

David unlocked his phone and idly scrolled through his past phone calls, thinking on the numerous times he had tried to call Tobias.
